As an artist here in Aotearoa, I am inspired by my surrounding environment. My work portrays imagery from not only our visual landscape and daily surroundings, but also our cultural landscape and what it means to come from bi-cultural Aotearoa. As a Pakeha New Zealander I view Maori culture as an integral part of our cultural make-up. This is what sets us apart from the rest of the world. Through my schooling and extended family I have developed a great appreciation of Maori culture and it’s customs and art forms. I use a lot of Maori motifs and patterns in my art work, along with iconic references to Kiwi culture. As a Pakeha New Zealander I view both Maori culture and Pakeha culture as one Aotearoa, New Zealand culture.
